High-temperature polyimide (PI) labels for PCBs and electronics

Polyimide film labels with silicone or acrylic adhesive, intended to accompany the printed circuit board (PCB) through reflow and wave soldering and chemical cleaning during its manufacture. They are thermal-transfer printed with barcodes, QR or DataMatrix and can be supplied with pre-printed serial numbers.

They are made to order: die-cut shape, colour and numbering are defined with each customer. We do not publish generic temperature figures; they are confirmed against the material datasheet and your process profile.

In short

What it is: Polyimide with silicone or acrylic adhesive for PCBs and electronics; serial and DataMatrix.

What we need to quote: Temperature profile: peak, time and number of cycles; Type of cleaning agent and flux; Size, shape and colour.

Applications

  • PCB and SMT manufacturing in EMS plants.
  • Automotive electronics.
  • Industrial controls.

Use on the production line

The label is applied to the board to go with it through reflow or wave soldering and chemical cleaning. The serialized DataMatrix code identifies each board and links it to the batch data in your traceability system.

Batch and serial data can be delivered in a file, to load into your system before production.

Materials and finishes

  • White, yellow or amber polyimide (PI) film; ESD version.
  • Silicone or acrylic adhesive.
  • Rolls with 1″ or 3″ core.
  • Thermal-transfer printing with resin ribbons.
  • Pre-printed serial, QR and DataMatrix; custom die-cut shapes.

Serialization and traceability options

  • Serialized DataMatrix and encoding rules agreed with your MES.
  • Batch traceability data file.
  • Film colour and custom die-cut shape.
  • Samples to test on your own line (conditions are stated in the offer).

No temperature figures are given: they depend on the material, the adhesive and the process profile, and are confirmed against the datasheet of the proposed material.

What we need to quote

  • Temperature profile: peak, time and number of cycles.
  • Type of cleaning agent and flux.
  • Size, shape and colour.
  • Quantity tiers.
  • Code symbology and numbering rule.
  • Printer and ribbon model.

Documentation available on request

The production partner provides datasheets and test reports on request. Samples or trials: conditions are stated in the offer. REACH and RoHS are usual references in electronics; if your process requires a specific materials declaration, say so in the enquiry and the offer will confirm whether it can be provided. Only the name and number of each rule are cited; applying them and the legal responsibility rest with the customer.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature does a polyimide label withstand?

It depends on the film, the adhesive and the process profile (peak, time and cycles). We do not publish a generic figure: tell us your profile and cleaning, and it is confirmed against the datasheet of the proposed material.

Can DataMatrix and sequential numbering be printed?

Yes, by thermal transfer with resin ribbons or pre-printed. The encoding rules are agreed with your MES.

Silicone or acrylic adhesive?

Both are available. The choice depends on the process and on the cleaning agents and fluxes you use; state them in the enquiry.

Is there an ESD version?

Yes, the polyimide film is also available in an ESD version, as well as white, yellow and amber.

Can you provide a reflow test report?

We do not promise it. The production partner provides datasheets and test reports on request; a specific reflow report is confirmed in the offer if it can be obtained, and meanwhile you can test samples on your line.

Which printer and ribbon do I need?

Printing is by thermal transfer with resin ribbons. Tell us the printer and ribbon model you use and we will propose a compatible material.
