Serialized QR labels with online verification

A label with a unique QR code and online verification identifies each unit with its own code. When it is scanned, a verification page can show whether the code exists, warn of repeated scans and collect statistics by region or channel. The QR can be combined with a scratch-off layer, hologram or NFC.

The project has two parts: the printed label with its number file and, if needed, the software part (verification page and customer back office). The scope of each part is defined and confirmed in the offer.

Applications

Industries where unique-code verification is used:

  • Wine and drinks.
  • Cosmetics.
  • Food supplements.
  • Electronic products.
  • Automotive parts.
  • Agricultural inputs.

Materials and finishes

  • Label layer: PET or paper, as in the scratch-off and holographic labels.
  • Optional layers: scratch-off, holographic and, depending on the project, NFC.
  • Codes: QR or DataMatrix; GS1 Digital Link if you use GS1 codes.
  • Variable-data printing, with a different code on each unit.

What the project can include

The software parts are optional and defined case by case.

  • Number file: numbering, range rules and duplicate checks.
  • Verification page in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
  • Repeated-scan alert, with a decision rule agreed with the customer.
  • Statistics by region or channel.
  • Customer back office to look up the codes.

What we need to quote

  • List of products (SKUs) and annual usage.
  • Whether you need the verification page to be hosted, languages and data-retention period.
  • Numbering rules and repeated-scan decision rules.
  • Method of application, surface and security layers.
  • Whether you already use an ERP or barcodes, for example GS1 DataMatrix.
  • GDPR requirements.

Documentation available on request

  • The production partner provides datasheets and test reports on request.
  • Samples and material sample cards on request; terms are stated in the offer.
  • When the project requires it, we ask the production partner for the substance declaration of inks and adhesives (REACH).

Reference regulations and standards

References usually consulted: Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR), for scan records with IP or location and data hosting; Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR); REACH. Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 is cited only as informative background on electronic wine labelling with QR and web; it is not an anti-counterfeiting requirement. Only their name and number are given.

The legal content of the label is defined by the customer; we reproduce the signed proof.

Frequently asked questions

How can a product's authenticity be verified with a QR code?

Each label carries a unique code; scanning it opens a verification page. According to the EUIPO, a code with a unique URL makes it possible to retrieve product data from the cloud, and the platform can record the scans to detect illicit activity.

Does a QR code protect against copying by itself?

No. The EUIPO states that a QR alone offers no protection against copies and can be combined with holograms, copy detection patterns or unique identifiers. That is why it is combined with a scratch-off or holographic layer.

What is a repeated-scan alert?

It is a rule that flags a code checked more times than expected. The rule is agreed with the customer in each project.

What does the GDPR mean for online verification?

If the scan record includes the IP address or location, people must be informed under Regulation (EU) 2016/679. The controller, hosting and retention period are defined per project.

Can it be combined with other layers?

Yes: a scratch-off layer, a holographic layer and, depending on the project, NFC.
